MISHAWAKA -- It was billed as the "Princess Theater for the Princess City." That was 72 years ago. Today, pigeons dart in and out of the Tivoli's badly broken and crumbling stained glass centerpiece that faces North Main Street.
It's hard to believe the Tivoli's facade is in worse disrepair now than it was two years ago when Ken Allen first bought the building. Allen purchased the property from Mishawaka's Redevelopment Commission for $10 and agreed to have the theater completely restored by last month. June arrived and Allen asked for an extension.
Commissioners seem reluctant to give up and yet reluctant to give in. They've put off making a decision on the matter until later this month. Thus, the partnership that was made in heaven has now seen the brimstone of hell. Support for Allen has become as jagged as the broken stained glass on the front of the Tivoli building. Many profess that they don't want to see the building demolished, yet add it may be time to let go.
