It took more than 30 minutes to order dinner at Lilette last week. For once, the problem was not too few servers in the dining room. We caused the delay ourselves.
The selection offered by the menu offered so many vivid temptations I grew impatient with my usual method of review - eating what I could today and coming back a couple more times in the near future to try other dishes that sounded irresistible. I wanted it all now.
Lilette has one of the most appetizing menus in these parts, at least if your palate prefers a wide palette of flavors. It's the creation of chef-owner John Harris. After spending time in France and in the kitchen at Gautreau's, he opened this cafe six years ago and immediately received top plaudits.
It's a fine space, a corner store on Magazine Street with large windows in two directions, a tiled floor and an antique bar. After the storm, a renovation moved the bar from the back of the room to the side. This added tables by eliminating peculiar corners.
Harris cooks the French-inspired but largely American style popular nationwide. The marker dishes for the cuisine - short ribs and pork belly - are on the menu. The menu reflects the flavors of local cuisine...
