Since he was re-elected last year, President George W. Bush has been pilloried for the Iraq war, the federal response to Hurricane Katrina and countless other policy mistakes. One columnist even labeled him as the worst president since Herbert Hoover.
In fairness to the late Herbert C. Hoover, there are many lessons that President Bush could learn if he paid more attention to the sayings of the thirty-first president.
As the country's deficit kept rising, Hoover said, blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the national debt. Bush came into office with a trillion-dollar surplus left to him by President Bill Clinton and has turned it into a trillion-dollar deficit. We know who will be paying for it.
Hoover had seen two wars during his lifetime and knew what price his country would pay for any armed conflict. Old men declare war. But it is the youth that must fight and die, Hoover declared....
