M2 PRESSWIRE-18 June 1996-COMMISSION FOR RACIAL EQUALITY: Alienation growing among young people, warns CRE (C)1994-96 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
Britain will ignore at its peril the deep sense of alienation developing among some sections of its young people, the Commission for Racial Equality said today.
Publishing its annual report for 1995, the CRE said its greatest concern during the year had been "a sharpening awareness of the deep sense of alienation developing among certain sections of our young people, especially those from ethnic minority backgrounds. As a society, we ignore this at our peril."
Though there were signs of a positive shift in behaviour and attitudes on issues of discrimination and racism, "many people still see race relations as someone else's problem not theirs". Yet tolerance and intolerance co-existed in our society and "while some things...
