COMPAQ COMPUTER CORP. said last week it would close or consolidate nine facilities worldwide as it continues to integrate operations with Digital Equipment Corp. and as it finishes integrating operations with Tandem Computers Inc.
"The decisions on the facilities were customer-quality and cost-driven," said Earl Mason. Comia(l's chief financial officcer. "We decided to streamline certain operations to offer better response time to our customers as well as improve the quality of services we provide them and do that at the lowest possible cost." Mason said that Compaq is closing down some facilities "to achieve an objective to deliver 95 percent of all products anywhere in the world within five days or less."
