WHAT'S HOT: As it has done with several of its ink jets, Compaq simply relabeled a Lexmark model to produce the IJ1200. In this case, Compaq hitched its wagon to a star: the Lexmark Z42 Color Jetprinter, which is one of PC World's top-rated low-cost printers. Like the Z42, the IJ1200 prints text at a zippy 4.5 pages per minute, and it beats the Lexmark model at printing graphics, at 1.0 ppm. Text looks crisp, if slightly less black than we'd like, while color graphics show subtle textures and shading with fine detail. The driver also makes it easy to print documents that deviate from the ordinary single- sided letter-size job; you can easily stack, fold, and bind booklets, for example.
