French bicycle manufacturers who equip today's champion cyclists are getting ready to offer ultralight, highly maneuverable bikes made from composites rather than metal to the general public.
One company called Mavic manufactures 10,000 ultralight wheels for top-end consumer and competition bicycles annually. Sold under the name Cosmic Carbon, these wheels weigh approximately 650 grams (23 oz), whereas a traditional metal wheel can weigh from 950 to 1000 grams (33.5 to 35.3 oz).
