Doctors in Central New York and across the nation are rallying in protest of what they call an "insurance crisis." They're calling on state and federal officials to curb rising health-care insurance costs and medical malpractice-insurance premiums.
New York is one of 18 states considered "in crisis" by the American Medical Association. The AMA says that certification is levied against states where the cost of running a practice is extraordinarily high.
Ann Cea, president of the Medical Society of New York, says insurance companies - especially those who provide liability insurance - are to blame. She says premiums have become so high that physicians have no choice but to try to recoup their expenses in rising health-care fees.
"Soon, only the rich will be able to afford medical care," Cea says. "The working middle class and the poor will fall through the cracks."
