THE CHALLENGE OF LEADERSHIP development is a core business issue in general, but it is particularly important in franchising due to the entrepreneurial nature of our industry. One of my observations over the years has been that franchising does a great job of providing training skills and brand-specific content, but there is precious little in the way of leadership or entrepreneurial training. It is a myth that purchasing a franchise or being employed by a franchisor somehow qualifies an individual to be a business leader. Leadership requires development and franchising can take a foremost position in this area. I believe that franchising offers three key components of leadership development: education, exposure and experience. Skills in these areas can prepare leaders for success in our industry.
