Hiroshima-based J-Air, Japan Airlines' domestic third-level carrier, has ordered two 50-seat CRJ200s from Bombardier Aerospace. The airline holds options on an additional three CRJ200s. It plans to use the CRJs on thin JAL routes and new domestic routes.
"Strategically, this is an extremely important sale for us," said Steven A. Ridolfi, president of Bombardier Aerospace Regional Aircraft. "Our market forecast points to an increasingly important market in the Asia-Pacific region, most notably in Japan."
Two weeks before the J-Air order announcement, The Fair Inc. of Tokyo placed an order for two previously owned CRjs obtained from a European operator. The carrier will add two new aircraft from Bombardier in its third year of operation in 2002. The Fair Inc., an All Nippon Airways partner, will use the first two CRjs, based in Sendai, on businessoriented routes such as Hiroshimanishi/Haneda. Under terms of a cooperative agreement, ANA will provide The Fair Inc. with assistance in flight operations, Right crew provision, maintenance and engineering services and other areas.
In the past year, eight Asia-Pacific operators have purchased seven CRJs and 11 Q Series turboprops.

The service will provide worldwide, realtime weather data to aircraft, allowing pilots to make weather-related decisions earlier. Rockwell Collins said it also will enhance safety, allow airlines to achieve better ontime arrival rates, save fuel and provide passengers with a more comfortable ride.
