Abstract
The Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) in November 1999 released data showing the state of the state banking system. Both the federal government and the individual states issue bank charters and examine financial institutions for the benefit of their citizens. At year-end 1998, states supervised 6,316 commercial banks, 257 BIF-insured savings banks, and 295 SAIF-insured savings banks - a total of 6,868 institutions. State bank supervisors are the primary regulators of state-chartered banks.
