Iowa became the 14th state to ratify the D.C. Voting Rights Amendment last Thursday when the Iowa Senate passed the measure 30-17. The Iowa House of Representative voted 62-32 in 1983.
In praising the vote, Congressman Walter E. Fauntroy said he was "delighted that the Iowa State Legislature has chosen to do what is right, just, and fair for the people of the District of Columbia."
"The victory in Iowa is significant," Fauntroy said, "because it demonstrates that the citizens of our country can rise above narrow parochialism to meet the challenge of fundamental human rights for all the citizens of our nation."
