Neither rash nor timid is this extraordinary member of the international league of Marines.
AT the time when the Royal Danish Navy was counted among the greatest in the world, a company of Marines was founded in 1672. It had the same functions as similar units of the British and the Dutch navies of those days, first and foremost shipboard combat and shore operations. In 1680 this company was increased to a Marineregiment. It was an integral part of the Navy until 1692, when it was transferred to the Danish Army, though still to be used afloat. On account of the economical difficulties about maintaining great military forces his Majesty the King of Denmark hired out several units, among them the Marineregiment, to friendly sovereigns in need of military forces.
