Catherine Otto Montgomery, 58, on May 27, 2010, of cancer. Montgomery, founder and executive director of the nonprofit American institute for Stuttering Treatment and Professional Training in New York City, received her master's degree in speech-language pathology from Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU). She created a private practice, Total Immersion Fluency, which she expanded in 1997 to create the institute, which offers stuttering treatment for all ages and clinical training in stuttering to emerging and seasoned clinicians. Montgomery, one of the first clinicians to receive specialty recognition in fluency disorders, chaired the Specialty Board for Fluency Disorders and helped create guidelines for training specialists in the area of stuttering treatment. She presented workshops and seminars throughout the United States and Europe, including The World Congress of the International Fluency Association. She participated in the first lobbying efforts for increased federal funding for stuttering research and clinical treatment, and received the 2007 SCSU Distinguished and Outstanding Alumni Award. Montgomery is survived by her husband, Jon, and three brothers, Richard. Robert, and John.
