The origins of Decoma International Inc. can be traced to the late 1970s when its parent company Magna established Polyrim to mold and paint RIM bumpers. Plydex, Magna's first plant dedicated solely to injection molding, was built in Aurora, Ont. in 1985, followed shortly after by Rimply, a painting/finishing facility in Newmarket, Ont. Today, Decoma consists of 17 wholly-owned facilities in Ontario, Quebec and Michigan, a joint-venture with Ford (CONIX, in which Decoma has a 51% stake), plastics painting, mold production and tooling facilities and a foam injection molding facility recently established in Belgium.
"Most of our growth we believe has come as a result of the fact that we have concentrated on the finishing side of plastics," says Decoma president Al Power. zA lot of our competitors focused on molding and left the finishing to the Tier twos, whereas with us molding is really tier-two to our finishing processes."
