Legislation that would transfer funds from FCC spectrum auctions to a fund for research and development of 5G network virtualization has been offered as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2021 (S 4049).
Appearing today at a virtual event on 5G network security hosted by USTelecom, Sen. Mark Warner (D., Va.) said the amendment mirrored language in the Utilizing Strategic Allied (USA) Telecommunications Act, which he is sponsoring (CPR, Jan. 14). He said the amendment was part of a "managers" package of amendments, which boosts its chances of passage. The Senate is aiming to wrap up work on the NDAA this week.
