Description: The reviewed Dell Dimension 4100 Desktop Computer had a 733 MHz Pentium III processor, the smallest in the series at the time. As this review goes to press, an 800 MHz Pentium III is now the smallest in the series.
As with all Dell computers, the Dimension is available only through Dell eCom, by online or telephone order.
Note: This review focuses on the purchase of a single personal computer. Volume purchase programs for education are available.
Specifications: The basic Dimension 4100 Series system has 128 MB of SDRAM, a 20 GB hard drive, 17-inch monitor, 48x variable CD-ROM drive, V90/56k modem, Altec Lancsing ACS-- 340 speakers with subwoofer and a SoundBlaster card, mouse, keyboard, and 3.5-inch floppy drive. The setup includes Microsoft Windows Millennium, Microsoft Works Suite 2001, and Norton Antivirus 2000.
The reviewed computer was customized to included an internal Zip drive, a video editing card and software, a read/write CD-ROM drive, a DVD-ROM drive, and an enhanced sound system with a huge subwoofer for about $800 extra.
Price: $1,199-basic model, which is very good for beginners and advanced users alike. Five package enhancements can raise the base price to as much as $2,119. A variety of additional customizable options can raise the price quite a bit more.
