Delta Dental Plan of California is on a hiring spree in Sacramento as it prepares to roll out a big expansion of the federal dental care program for retirees on Oct. 1.
San Francisco-based Delta Dental administers the Tricare Retiree Dental Program program out of its Sacramento office. New benefits being added to the Tricare Retiree Dental Program are designed to appeal to an estimated 4.2 million retirees and their family members.
Currently, there are 525,000 people enrolled.
Fifty new permanent employees have been hired, and another 100 temporary workers are expected to come on board for two to six months to handle the growth. Growth in other programs will add another 50 people to the local work force this autumn.
By the time that's done, Delta Dental will have a local work force of about 950, up almost 19 percent from a year ago.
More expansion is likely. The company, over time, expects to grow here rather than in the Bay Area.
Delta Dental consolidated its local work force over the last two years into three buildings on International Drive in Rancho Cordova owned by Evergreen Zinfandel Partners.
