Denise Abner, assistant vice president, Union National Bank, Barbourville, has found a unique way to teach elementary school children about money and savings. Money the Clown, Abner's alter ego, visits preschool through 4th grade students. Dressed in a clown costume, accented with money (money hair bow, money earrings and money on her shoes), Money the Clown visits classrooms to teach kids about money.
Abner has tailored different programs to suit the students' ages and knowledge about money and banking.
Among her props, Abner uses a money board that features various combinations of coins that make up $1.00 on it. "I use it a lot," said Abner. "And of course, I always tell the Penny Tree story."
