NetMeeting is an effective collaboration tool for virtual meetings when you can't be there in person. But for this tool to be truly effective, you want to ensure that all your NetMeeting users have the same standard features, settings and options. You also need to be able to change those settings and options quickly and easily. How can you ensure that NetMeeting looks and acts the same throughout your entire organization? How can you easily manage and maintain all of your NetMeeting clients?
Microsoft anticipated the potential issues faced by NetMeeting administrators and created the NetMeeting Resource Kit in response. The Resource Kit lets you build your own customized NetMeeting installation and maintain the same settings for all your NetMeeting users.
Time for NetMeeting
In this article, we'll explain all the ins and outs of NetMeeting including an explanation of how to deploy and manage NetMeeting using the Resource Kit. We'll also show you how to administer NetMeeting using NT system policies.
Learning about NetMeeting
Before you can design your NetMeeting installation you'll need to understand the software's various settings and options. The Resource Kit documentation explains virtually everything you need to know to build and support your NetMeeting installation. You can find more information at Microsoft's NetMeeting Web site at www.microsoft.com/windows/NetMeeting. Other third-party Web sites provide useful tips, tricks and instructions on NetMeeting, some of which are listed in Table A.
Microsoft hosts several newsgroups on NetMeeting so you can discover how other NetMeeting administrators work with the product. You can access these newsgroups through your newsreader program by pointing it to msnews .microsoft.com or online at Microsoft's newsgroup Web page at http://support.microsoft.com /newsgroups. Microsoft's NetMeeting newsgroups are listed in Table B.
Creating your NetMeeting
installation
You can download the NetMeeting Resource Kit from Microsoft at www.microsoft.com/windows /NetMeeting/Corp/reskit. The Resource Kit is a 2.6 MB self-extracting installation file called nm3rk.exe, with the following components:
* The NetMeeting program. The latest version of NetMeeting, currently 3.01.
* The NetMeeting Resource Kit Wizard. The tool you use to create and customize your NetMeeting installation.
