"Most of my friends who have been down here to visit me tell me that I've died and gone to club manager heaven," said Timothy Walker, general manager of the Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe. The southern California golf club, nicknamed "The Bridges," features two 185-ft long golf cart bridges, spanning a 300-ft wide, 75-ft deep canyon. Designed by T.Y. Lin International especially for this site, the structures consist of prestressed concrete ribbons, seemingly suspended with invisible support structures.
The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe first opened to members as a golf course a year prior to the clubhouse's grand opening in November 2000. The staggered launch created quite a buzz within the membership, who began their relationship with the club on a newly-designed Robert Trent Jones, Jr. course that spanned the entire length of the 40-acre property. "It is one of these golf courses that when you leave the clubhouse, you may not ever know that anyone else is out there," Walker said. The course stretches a mile and a half from the fourth tee on the southeast corner of the property to the 13th tee on the northwest corner.
When developers first visited the Bridges site, they were struck by the breathtaking canyons and flowing hillsides. The land was too special for a run-of-the-mill clubhouse, and the developers eventually decided that a "Tuscan Village on a Hillside" theme would do the most justice to the club's surroundings.
