The historic Robinson family estate near Waimea in West Kauai could become an upscale, low-density resort under a $33 million proposal by a California developer.
The 155-acre property centers on the century-old Robinson family homestead, which has been unoccupied for more than 10 years.
Under the proposal by Santa Barbarabased Destination Villages, Kauai, LLC, the homestead will undergo a $1 million renovation, transforming it into a museum and arrival area for the resort.
The proposal is for a resort of 250 guest .units, scattered in 207 cottages across the property.
The cottages would be single story with 400 square feet of guest space and a 200-square-foot lanai.
The developer, who will lease the land from the Robinson family, has lodged a petition with the State Land Use Commission to amend the land use district boundaries. A hearing...
