The Power & Light Building's developer hopes to get the Kansas City Council's approval in March for a $115 million plan to modernize the 73-year-old landmark and build a parking garage that also would serve a proposed new office building and neighboring properties,
Steve Brettell said he hopes work starts on the garage by the third quarter. The Power & Light Building's $28 million project would begin about the same time.
Construction of a new office building by Gailoyd Enterprises of Carmel, N.Y., which has owned the Power & Light Building since 1965, hinges on finding an anchor tenant. The new building, envisioned at 210,000 square feet, is budgeted at $34 million and would receive no public support.
Brettell, who represents Gailoyd, said the approval process has taken longer than expected. He acknowledged that city officials first needed to secure H&R Block Inc.'s headquarters, which is to open in 2006 at 13th and Main streets, a few...
