Just a quiet desert landing strip not long ago, Dubai International Airport has grown into a vibrant, regional hub. It served more than 8 million passengers in 1996, up 12.7% over 1995, and is in the midst of $540 million expansion, contracted to Bechtel Corp. By 2003, it expects to handle 15.5 million passengers, with a further rise to 17 million by 2010, according to Mohi-din Binhendi, dynamic director-general of Dubai's Dept. of Civil Aviation.
