Automated teller machines are popping up everywhere it seems, no matter what the transaction potential of the site. And deployers need to find ways to shave off as much expense as possible to try and make a profit.
North Canton, Ohio-based Diebold Inc. (DBD), the top vendor in the North American market, is trying to shift its strategy to address this low-end market. Known for its high-quality, high-price terminals for bank branches, Diebold is attempting to think small.
Diebold will unveil a new ATM designed for the off-premises, retail market that allows retailers to load bills into the machine themselves, eliminating the cost of hiring an armored car service for cash replenishment. The new terminal is being displayed this week at BAI's Retail Delivery '98 show in Las Vegas.
