Olive Lee Benson, one of the most respected African American hairdressers in the beauty industry, died in Boston on June 26 at age 72. "All her life, as she preached excellence and portrayed it herself in every endeavor, she fought the polarization so imbedded in this industry," said her longtime friend and colleague Bernice Calvin. "She was a Renaissance woman. We will miss her sassiness, her prodding to do better, her style."
