Telesat Canada (Telesat) and Hughes Network Systems (HNS), a unit of Hughes Electronics Corporation, recently announced the introduction of DirecPC, Canada's first digital satellite broadcast information service.
Uniting satellite and computing technologies, DirecPC offers fast, cost-effective delivery of data via Telesat Anik satellites to desktop PCs using a small dish antenna and receiver kit created by HNS. Recently launched in the United States, DirecPC is being marketed across Canada by Telesat.
Set to begin service starting on October 1, DirecPC will allow subscribers to tap into real-time news--including CBC Newsworld--live video feeds, new computer software and even Internet files at up to 12 megabits per second (Mb/s). Information providers will be able to use DirecPC to broadcast data, video and audio to multiple sites or send large time-critical files to a distant location in the blink of an eye.
With DirecPC, a large Internet document that would typically trickle into a computer in an hour via modem would arrive in a scant 90 seconds. Entire software programs appear in seconds. Full-colour graphics bloom instantly. And live full-motion video will play across your screen in real-time," explained Brad Poulos, DirecPC General Manager with Telesat.
