The Detroit Medical Center could be forced to close one of its hospitals and would lose about $25 million annually if the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute moves ahead with plans to buy St John Riverview, a lawsuit filed May 4 contends.
A hearing is scheduled for today on a request from the DMC for a temporary restraining order to prevent the sale from moving forward.
The suit, filed by the DMC and Michigan AFSCME Council 26 in Wayne County Circuit Court, claims Karmanos will, in effect, "abscond" with the DMC's cancer operations, if the transaction is allowed to take effect.
