Domino for AS/400 Version 4.6a has delivered on its promise to provide the most integrated, scalable, reliable, manageable, cost-effective and advanced Domino server available. Domino on the AS/400 is more than Domino. By exploiting some of the unique features of the AS/400, it can be said that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
Domino is a well-behaved, tightly integrated AS/400 application. Administration is "Notes-like" and/or "AS/400-like." System operators and administrators can use familiar tools, including the graphical Notes Administration client and Operations Navigator clients, or even the familiar green screen.
Domino on the AS/400 also supports the same data integration features as on other platforms, including:
Enterprise Integrator, or NotesPump
Domino Enterprise Connection Services (DECS), formerly the Realtime feature of NotesPump, available in Domino 4.63 and 5.0
Database functions and the LotusScript Data Object.
By the way, the LotusScript Data Object, a development tool that provides programmatic access to DB2/400, does not require ODBC as is required on all other platforms, except System/390.
Other standard features include directory synchronization with the AS/400 System Distribution Directory, and integration with OfficeVision and SMTP mail. Lotus Notes APIs for C, C++, RPG and the Lotus Notes HiTest API are also available. Further, partitioning, running multiple Domino servers on a single computer, uses AS/400 subsystems to isolate servers from one another and other applications. No other operating system supporting Domino does this.
Besides integration, Domino for AS/400 boasts:
Scalability
Robert Tipton and Larry Rosenbaum, authors of an introductory paper on the product, predicted thousands of Domino users would be supported on an AS/400. They had no idea it would support as many as 27,000 users, as proven by the recent NotesBench audit.
Scalability is not just about size, though. It's about the right size. The new AS/400e model 170 has been a popular low-end server for distributed applications.
Reliability
Only the AS/400 includes an automatic feature that will restart a Domino server subsystem after a software failure. This improves Domino's availability. OS/400 is a highly reliable operating system. Running several Domino servers in a cluster on a single AS/400 eliminates some of the performance, management and maintenance issues incurred when running multiple servers. And doing so only requires a single Domino Enterprise Server license.
