Policies can allow employees to share leave time with a co-worker.
When an employee is facing a serious illness, co-workers jump in and offer to help. They organize meal delivery, offer assistance around the house and sometimes want to donate their own paid time off to their sick colleague. It's a wonderful and generous gift. But a credit union may need a policy in place to spell out the rules.
This was the topic of discussion recently on the CUES Net(TM) Web forum.
"We have a young employee, 24, who has just been diagnosed with cancer and will need to undergo nine months of treatment," wrote Al Smith, CCUE, president/CEO of $71 million/7,700-member Hopewell Federal Credit Union (www.hopewellfcu.org), Heath, Ohio. "Our current sick leave policy does not permit an employee to donate some of their sick leave to another employee. If you permit this, would you please share with me your policy? Several employees have already offered to donate some of their sick leave to him."
