LEITCH-DPS DPSVELOCITY
In Brief: In the most basic hardware/software bundie, the dpsReality card comes with the dpsReality software. This configuration is intended for animators. The dpsReality software allows you to capture clips from video, string clips together, sync audio and video clips, perform some minor editing, and record a sequence back to tape. Recognizing a good thing and wishing to add more editing functionality, the engineers at Leitch-DPS developed dpsVelocity, a full-blown nonlinear editing application. For well under $10K (depending on options), you can purchase a card and software bundle. Add computer, monitors, and storage and your nonlinear edit system is ready. The current version of dpsVelocity (7.6) also ships with several third-party applications-Cayman Graphics' Power CG (for advanced titling), eyeon Software's Digital Fusion DFX+ (compositing and advanced effects), Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge XP (additional audio processing and editing), and Sonic Solutions' DVDit! (DVD authoring). Of course, others like Boris FX and Inscriber can also be purchased. Consult your dealer for the optimum system requirements and compatibility.
Price: Well under $10K (depending on options) Info: www.dps.com
If you've been in broadcasting or animation, DPS has been a familiar name. DPS, now a division of Leitch Technology, initially made its mark in the graphics world by developing inexpensive digital disk recording technology for the animator, working on personal computers instead of expensive workstations. This technology, which has evolved through a series of cards known as the Personal Animation Recorder, DPS Hollywood, DPS Perception, and others, is a PCI card which fits into most mainstream PCs and allows sequential animation files to be played out as video.
Leitch-DPS has expanded this initial hardware solution with various software solutions for the animator and now the editor. LeitchDPS' core products are the dpsReality Studio Digital Disk Recorder and the dpsVelocity nonlinear editor. Both software solutions are based on the dpsReality video recorder card and the DPS Virtual Tape File System (VTFS). The card itself is an amazing piece of engineering, combining video I/O, compression, processing, and onboard SCSI control into a single PCI card requiring just one IRQ. The standard card handles input and output of all analog formats (composite, component, Y/C video plus...
