Meeting Objective_
Motor vehicle crashes continue to be the number one cause of workplace deaths year after year. This safety meeting will address safe driving practices for workers who drive for their jobs and those who simply drive to their jobs.
Opening (Sample Speech)
Each of us likes to think that car crashes are something that happens to the "other guy," not us. In reality, of course, we all face a risk every time we get in our cars. And that risk is significant. Fortunately, we can improve our odds of avoiding a crash by learning how to be a defensive driver.
Discussion Guide
Defensive driving is driving to prevent accidents, in spite of the incorrect actions of others or adverse weather conditions. Defensive drivers anticipate driving hazards and adjust their actions accordingly. When you're at the controls of any vehicle, it is important to remember that defensive driving is a full-time job. The most dangerous mile you have to drive is the one directly ahead of you.
Today's roadways require a high level of skill, knowledge, and decisionmaking ability. Drivers who are safety conscious have developed good habits and practice them daily.
Respect all traffic laws and stay up to date on new laws. Wear your safety belt every time you get into a car. Don't be in a big hurry-obey all speed limits.
Never run red lights, and do not enter an intersection on a yellow light. Remember that flashing red lights should be treated as a stop sign.
