Industries represented by the Copyright Protection Technical Working Group (CPTWG) on DVD appear to have agreed on how they will encrypt data to prevent piracy, but some Hollywood studios are not confident those measures are sufficient and are considering having independent tests done to make sure the technology meets their standards.
Because the installed base of VCRs is far greater than PCs, Hollywood does have more at stake than PC software publishers. However, studio executives' desires for copyright guarantees are unrealistic.
"The hard thing in dealing with Hollywood is they want 100 percent protection, and it just doesn't exist," said Ron Richter, vice president of sales and marketing for CompCore Multimedia Inc.
The seemingly never-ending copyright scuttle is widening the chasm between the movie and computer industries....
