* News: With the evolution of the high-tech office, the hightech Office Depot is not far behind.
The chain of office supplies stores said it earned $88.17 million, or 28 cents a share, on sales of $2.9 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 28. Worldwide e-commerce sales were $542.9 million, up 35 percent from third quarter 2001. Keeping the compu-party going, Office Depot said it is on track to exceed $2 billion in worldwide e-commerce revenues this year.
The company first began its online business in 1985 for large customers. It launched its Web site for smaller customers in early 1998. In 2001, Office Depot bought officesupplies.com and computer retailer 4Sure.com along with the businesses of its two Webbased retail outlets, Computers4Sure.com and Solutions4Sure.com.
