DO YOU REMEMBER THE PHRASE "IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID" that was used during Bill Clinton's successful 1992 presidential campaign? It was a phrase developed by political strategist James Carville to bring attention to domestic issues at home since President George Bush had such a strong foreign policy agenda. Many believe the tactic helped to get President Clinton elected. A similar phrase could be used today as the new President and 111th Congress are elected. With the volatility in the stock market, rising energy and food prices, and looming increases in the numbers of Americans who are retiring, there is no doubt that economic issues must be a priority if we are to remain successful as a nation and responsive to our citizenry. Most politicians realize this and are talking about the economy as a critical priority.
