Through the portal Ciba Vision is putting its supply chain online, allowing it to conduct business with trading partners electronically and then track purchase orders, invoices and status reports over the Web, no software required.
By contrast, Sterling Commerce specializes in business-to-business e-commerce implementation through its proprietary software.
According to Cambridge, Mass.-based Forrester Research, business-to-business e-commerce spending grew to $43 billion in 1998 and is expected to skyrocket to $843 billion in 2000.
