Bulgin Components has been a respected member of the UK electronics industry for 75 years. While it started as a sales operation, it was always the founders intention to move in to manufacturing.
The founder, Arthur Frederick Bulgin, on leaving the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) at the end of the First World War, worked for Grafton Electric Company- Grelco - as sales manager. Born in 1899, he had already gained knowledge of wireless by the age 17 by meeting and talking to the Marconi radio operators on board the merchant ships coming into dock at his home town of Barry in Wales.
This tickled Arthur's interest and he moved on to construct his first `cat's whisker' radio receiver. He soon became the local expert. and started to supply parts and construct complete receivers for local residents.
His involvement with the RFC gave him further experience with wireless equipment which was just coming into general use. Although tempted to consider complete radio receiver construction, Arthur always favoured the sourcing and manufacture of the component parts. This was backed by his experience gained during time spent with Grafton Electric and his understanding of an emerging industry.
By 1923, having established a very small distribution business from a home base in Leytonstone, east London, Arthur formed the AF Bulgin & Co Ltd business in Cursitor Street, Chancery Lane.
