Abstract
In today's workplace, downsizing, constant change and increasing demands for error-free, precision performance have resulted in an increasing awareness that personal problems are inextricably related to workplace performance. One major response to this realization has been a surge in employee assistance programs (EAP). Modern EAPs cover a broad range of concerns, including: addictions, emotional problems, financial stress, personal legal problems, marital difficulties, family disturbances, and parenting challenges. EPAs make sense in tight job markets because the programs help companies salvage experienced employees by returning them to previous levels of productivity. Steps should be taken to develop an EAP including: 1. Gather workplace information. 2. Form a planning group. 3. Select a model. 4. Introduce a program.
