ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NEUROSCIENCE - (CD-ROM - Elsevier) - Edited by George Adelman (MIT) and Barry Smith (President/CEO Dreyfus Health Foundation), this encyclopedia represents the culmination of a massive international effort to create a definitive reference work and educational tool that takes full advantage of the latest developments in electronic information technology. The first edition of this work has served as an essential source of information for more than a decade. Now, the second revised and enlarged version is available on a single CD-ROM disc. Broad in scope and interdisciplinary, it includes more than 800 new or expanded contributions from internationally renowned experts, including several Nobel laureates. It covers topics such as neuroactive substances, neuro-imaging, theoretical neurobiology, motor control, neuropharmacology, neuronal regeneration, and molecular genetic neuroscience. It also provides a compendium on the development, current status, and future direction of neuroscience. Most contributions are enhanced by the inclusion of color illustrations and other graphics, animations, video sequences, and sound clips. A sophisticated search interface allows users to locate and retrieve information quickly and easily, or browse through topics of interest. The CD-ROM also includes useful navigational links to relevant Web sites and to more than 14,000 EMBASE abstracts. Multimedia features include the 3D Brain Viewer, and Professor Larry Swanson's flat map representations of rat and human brains to the Human Brain Atlas' "virtual sections" through three different planes of the "Visible Human" female data set. The CD-ROM can be installed under either Windows 95 or on Macintosh. The single user version is priced at $169.95 (U.S.).
