Enova Technologies and Philips Home Services last week unveiled a screen phone with a liquid crystal display, enlarged keypad, slide-out keyboard and a slot for "smart cards." Users will use the phone to pay bills, shop at home with the debit card-like smart cards or send electronic mail. San Diego-based Enova Technologies, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Enova Corp. and Burlington, Mass.-based Philips plan to build an electronic commerce network around the device, offering an alternative to the Internet. An Enova-owned company, San Diego Gas & Electric, will make the phones available to its 300,000 customers at little or no extra charge to expedite bill-paying. A monthly fee may be incurred later. More than 500,000 screen phones later will be distributed in San Diego and Orange County. (Enova, 619/696-1812; Philips, 617/238-3400.)
