BOULDER - For entrepreneur Greg Hartmann, profitability is a distant secondary goal; his first priority at the Hartmann Inline Rink in Boulder is to provide widespread access to a favorite sport: inline hockey.
Hartmann opened the outdoor inline skating rink at Gateway Park in 1999, using approximately $200,000 of his own funds to cover construction. he also supplies $200,000 annually to operate the rink and recoups between 50 percent to 75 percent of this amount each year from fees. he absorbs the difference, saying that he considers it to be his way of giving back to the community.
In addition to his contributions at the rink, Hartmann is a managing director with HVS International, an international consulting organization with offices in Boulder and Lafayette, and oversees a 20-person hospitality-consulting firm.
During the past five years, Hartmann and his partners acquired and renovated several local buildings, including Boulder historic landmark, the Oliver Bowman House. Hartmann also was responsible for the renovation and repositioning of the Boulder Outlook hotel.
Across the United States, participation in inline hockey is strong. USA Hockey Inline, a Colorado Springs-based provider of programs and tournaments to players of all ages and skill levels, has 70,000 members nationwide.
