It was the third Tuesday afternoon of September 1996. The whole world was gathered in one place-the Hall of the United Nations General Assembly. The fiftieth session was ended; the fifty-first was about to begin. The Assembly was invited to observe the International Day of Peace; then to observe a Minute of Silent Prayer or Meditation. This was a host of minutes all wrapped into one-a personal minute, yet a minute fraught with the needs of an entire globe; a minute of thanksgiving, yet of supplication.
