Danyelle Scott, co-owner of Dreamland Skateparks in Battleground, Wash., says skate park designers have something other contractors don't: They know how to build "flow."
"Someone who skateboards understands the flow of the park; they know it's not just a bunch of concrete obstacles," Scott said.
A general contractor couldn't do the work, she said, unless they hired a team of skaters/concrete fabricators.
So, the Eugene Bureau of Parks and Open Spaces wants to harness some of that flow as it decides who will act as the design-build firm for its proposed 18,000-square-foot Eugene City Center Skatepark, which will be located in Washington/Jefferson Park.
The city of Eugene on Tuesday closed bidding for the project's design-build phase after receiving proposals from six firms that specialize in design and construction of skate parks.
Because skate park construction is a specialized field, respondents to Eugene's request for proposals already have expertise designing and fabricating the necessary undulating concrete waves, tall ramps and steep drops that make a skate park more than simply formed concrete.
These contractors know flow.
