Rob Bilbro, president of Bilbro Construction Co., grew up in Ventura County and moved to San Diego in 1980.
Bilbro followed his then-girlfriend here, and landed a job at M.H. Golden Co., where he worked through the '80s.
Bilbro was the company's project manager at One America Plaza, the last high-rise office tower built in Downtown San Diego. M.H. Golden was a prominent general contractor at the time.
During that project, Bilbro left the company in 1990 and started a consulting company, Bilbro & Giffin, with business partner Mike Giffin.
Bilbro later sold his interest in the partnership and started Bilbro Construction in October 1997, when he purchased the local office of an out-of-town company.
The general contractor does only private construction. Its three legs of business are ground-up construction, tenant improvements, and facility services.
BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY
Essential business philosophy: Success in business is a series of base hits. You swing, and you swing, and once in a while, you get a line drive. In terms of service, I believe that success in business is paying attention to the details. If you do the best job for your customers, you will win.
Best way to keep a competitive edge: You can have great people, but you can't have a great company without good leadership.
Yardstick of success: It's having people...
