Sewn Products Expo/Mexico (Feria Industrial de la Costura/Mexico) has discontinued its association with an advisory committee primarily made up of Mexican equipment distributors, following demands and threats by the committee that show management considers illegal, anti-competitive, and detrimental to the apparel industry in Mexico. The show will take place as scheduled on Feb. 14-16, 1995, at Exhibimex in Mexico City. The committee members' goal was to limit participation in the show to Mexican companies, and, therefore, to limit the showing of products and services that might compete with their own.
The committee demanded that show management refuse show booth space to equipment manufacturers on the committee's "black-list," primarily manufacturers that do not have either an existing office or an existing distribution relationship with Mexico. (During a Dec. 13 meeting between committee representatives and show management in Mexico City, one committee member recoiled at the word "blacklist," suggesting that he would prefer to use the term "whitelist" for exhibitors...
