EDITOR'S COLUMN
On top of my office file cabinet sits an impressive collection of business promotional knickknacks. Coffee cups, sunglasses, yo-yos, squirt guns, shot glasses, a mechanical toy dog and a toy cellphone that always beeps when someone leans against the cabinet.
Like a museum curator, I've gotten a bit picky about what I will pick up at events because display space is limited. My most recent favorite is a ballpoint pen that lights up and blinks like a small laser with the push of a button.
Still, there I was at the Boulder Chamber's 11th annual Regional Business Expo, my Eight Days a Week bag in my hand, dropping Hershey's chocolates into it along with promotional brochures and the occasional advertising schwag. Just couldn't resist beer chillers from Liquor Mart. Cookies, donuts, candies and other treats were popular this year - and why not, might as well satisfy your sweet tooth while you listen to the pitch.
Larger businesses, like sponsors Pinnacol Assurance, Holland & Hart, QwestDex, Toshiba and others do an impressive job of event marketing with colorfully designed booths, videos and CD business cards. But their water bottle isn't really any more special than the next.
