A science center at Florida Atlantic University has a $10 million grant for voyages to the bottom of the sea.
FAU is one of three state universities to get the award, which will fund the Center of Excellence in Biomedical and Marine Biotechnology.
"We expect that this center will lead to the commercialization of new medicines, which can mean more high-tech companies for Florida:' said Larry F. Lemanski, FAU VP for research and graduate studies.
The center is part of the recently opened Charles E. Schmidt Biomedical Science Center, which faced 16 other programs that made presentations.
The university put together a coalition of local institutions and investigative programs to win the award.
The focus will be on marine resources that can be developed and commercialized into medicines and bio-products that treat cancer, arthritis and cardio-vascular diseases.
The Legislature appropriated $30 million for the program last year so the money is ready for dispersal after review...
