FELIPE BACA was one of the first permanent settlers of southern Colorado. Baca County is named for him.
He was born in 1829 in Mexico, in what is now Rio Arriba County. N.M. He was raised as an orphan. At 6, he worked for his uncle for $1 per month, driving goats.
Baca raised cattle in Mexico and was already a man of achievement when he immigrated to Colorado.
In 1858, Baca left Mexico with four wagonloads of flour to sell to the small community of Denver, along the banks...
