Abstract

Fixed-position scanners continue to be the most effective tool for scanning bar codes on cartons and other items moving along cartons at speeds up to several hundred feet a minute. Fixed scanners have maintained their preeminent position by becoming more flexible and versatile in several categories. They can accommodate: 1. a range of bar code label placement on cartons and other items, 2. space restrictions along conveyors and other materials pathways, 3. less than perfect labels, and 4. conventional and 2-dimensional bar codes. Both laser and charge coupled device scanners have autodiscrimination capabilities that instantly determine if a bar code is linear or 2-D, and decode it correctly. While both types of scanners can read both types of bar codes, not every one reads all 2-D and linear bar codes. Hardware specifications will detail the specific capabilities.
