DUBROVNIK, Croatia--Barry Conrad, a former Burger King executive widely credited as a key player in the chain's recovery, was among the executives killed with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Ronald H. Brawn in a plane crash near this ancient medieval town.
At the time of his death, Conrad, who was 55, was chairman and chief executive of the Barrington Group, a Coral Gables, Fla.-based company that markets and manages hotels in popular tourist regions.
"I know at times like this one is expected to say nice things, but in this case the facts speak for themselves," said Barry Gibbons, BK's former chief executive and the man who hired Conrad. "He was simply a lovely, congenial, approachable man whose service ethic was unassailable.
